Let's start with the basics. The prostate is a walnut-sized hormonal gland near the bladder in males. It is important in various sexual and hormonal functions. When it comes to prostate problems the common symptoms are frequent urination, inability to fully empty the bladder, weak urine stream, and referred back pain.
November is Men's Health Awareness month, promoting awareness of men's health issues. Specifically prostate cancer.
Now I've not done a formal survey, but I think it's fair to say if you run into someone who is not AWARE of prostate cancer, they have been living under a rock. Mission accomplished. Americans are aware of prostate cancer.
Once a year we have a fire marshall come and make sure we are meeting our safety codes for fire, and never, not even once, has he asked me, "Are you aware of fires?". Why is that? It's because awareness does not equal prevention! It's time to take the next step forward, from awareness to action! Here are some risks and tips to tell your family and friends. Follow these steps and make a real difference!
Risks: There are certain risks we cannot control, such as being over 50, having a family history of prostate cancer, or being of African-American descent. Don't worry about what you can't control, here are three things you can control!
1. Overweight/obesity
2. Sedentary Lifestyle
3. Diets high in animal fats (bacon, sausage, etc.)
Prevention:
1. Exercise!
2. Eat green leafy vegetables, freshly prepared beans, and tomatoes.
3. A critical mineral - most men do not get enough zinc through diet alone. Zinc is crucial in the functioning of th prostate. Make sure if you are taking a zinc supplement it is a NATURAL, WHOLE FOOD supplement, not a synthetic isolated form. If you're not sure what the difference is ask Dr. Kathleen or myself.
4. Two herbs have shown promising results in reducing the rate of growth in the prostate. Those herbs are Saw Palmetto and Stinging Nettle. If you are interested in herbal supplementation make sure you are getting them from a reputable, standardized, pharmaceutical grade provider. We recommend Medi-Herb in our clinic.
Remember, supplements are supplemental. Your first line of defense is always exercise and a healthy diet consisting of lots of vegetables! Of course I don't need to mention the importance of a healthy spine and nervous system in regulating your body's wellbeing and function:)
Awareness is good, prevention is much better.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
